RESUMO

Atherosclerosis is the preliminary cause of coronary artery disease, one of the diseases that account for the largest number of fatal mortalities. Physical activity is an effective strategy to restrain atherosclerosis from deterioration. Evidence indicated that changes in the proteomic profile are highly associated with atherosclerosis development, but the mechanism behind exercise for atherosclerosis amelioration has not yet been investigated from a proteomics perspective. Hence, the proteomic profiles could further elucidate the systematic effects of exercise intervention on ApoE knockout atherosclerotic model and high-fat-diet intervention. In the current study, Apoeem1Narl/Narl mice were randomly allocated into a normal diet (ND), Western diet (WD), and WD with 12-week exercise intervention (WD EX) groups. The plasma proteome between WD and WD EX groups demonstrate the significant difference, and ten major pathways, including cardiovascular disease (CVD)-hematological disease, inflammatory disease, infectious diseases, inflammatory response, cell-to-cell signaling and interaction, connective tissue disorders_inflammatory disease, metabolic disease_organismal injury and abnormalities, cell-to-cell signaling and interaction, connective tissue disorders_inflammatory disease, and endocrine system disorders_gastrointestinal disease, etc., were generated by the IPA analysis. The 15 proteins (MYOCD, PROS1, C2, SERPINA10, CRP, F5, C5, CFB, FGG, CFH, F12, PRDX2, PROZ, PPIA, and HABP2) critically involved in CVD-hematological disease pathway showed significant difference between WD and WD EX groups. In current study, exercise could significantly alleviate the significantly elevated C5 and inflammation induced by the WD group in accordance with amelioration of atherosclerosis. Therefore, exercise could mitigate chemotaxis through the modulation of the C5 level and innate immunity, thereby alleviating the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis in Western-diet-induced obese mice.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess the risk of stroke (and subtypes of stroke) in women after elective bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy at hysterectomy for benign diseases. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a nationwide population-based, retrospective cohort study using claims data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance program between 1997 and 2013. Women aged 20 years or more who underwent bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy at hysterectomy for benign diseases (n = 1083) were compared with women who did not undergo bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy at hysterectomy for benign diseases (n = 3903). The follow-up period ranged from 10 to 16 years. Age-adjusted (or unadjusted) and multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate the risk of stroke between the two groups. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: A diagnosis of stroke (and subtypes of stroke). RESULTS: We did not find a significant association between bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and the risk of incident stroke (or subtypes of stroke) over an average follow-up of 13 years. Among women aged 50 years or more who used estrogen therapy, the risk of developing stroke was 64% lower in those who had undergone bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (hazard ratio, 0.36; 95% confidence interval, 0.16-0.79) than in those who had undergone hysterectomy only. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that the use of estrogen after bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy at hysterectomy for benign diseases reduces the risk of stroke in women aged 50 years or more.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study intended to investigate whether etiological stroke subtypes and their corresponding major risk factors have differential effects on outcomes between genders. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We enrolled 403 consecutive patients with first-ever acute ischemic stroke (170 women, 233 men), from a referral hospital in Taiwan over a 2-year period. Gender differences in demographics, vascular risk factors, access to health care, etiological stroke subtypes, stroke severity, and outcomes were examined. The primary outcome variable of the study was any unfavorable outcome due to acute ischemic stroke, defined as a modified Rankin Scale score of 3 or higher at 90 days after stroke. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify predictors of poor outcomes. RESULTS: There were no gender disparities in baseline severity, stroke subtypes, access to health care, and medical comorbidities. Although women had poorer outcomes, female gender was not a predictor of unfavorable outcomes. Important predictors included age of 75years or older (odds ratio [OR] = 2.67; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.46-4.90), National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale greater than or equal to 8 (OR = 8.38; 95% CI, 4.61-15.2), lack of cohabitation (OR = 2.13; 95% CI, 1.26-3.61), subtypes of cardioembolism (OR = 2.76; 95% CI, 1.29-5.93), and large-artery atherosclerosis (OR = 2.93; 95% CI, 1.47-5.85). In subgroup analyses, the gender-specific independent predictors were cardioembolism (OR = 7.42; 95% CI, 2.21-24.9) or atrial fibrillation (OR = 3.57; 95% CI, 1.31-9.74) in women, and large-artery atherosclerosis (OR = 3.35; 95% CI, 1.30-8.64) or symptomatic large-artery stenosis (OR = 3.42; 95% CI, 1.69-6.96) in men. The differential effects of these predictors according to gender were revealed by interaction tests. CONCLUSION: Atrial fibrillation and symptomatic large-artery stenosis are predictors of poor stroke outcomes in women and men, respectively.

RESUMO

A human life demand set to emerge in the future is the achievement of sustainability by maintaining a comfortable indoor environment without excessive reliance on energy-consuming air conditioners. The major research processes in this study are: (1) measuring indoor air quality and thermal comfort to evaluate the comfort of an indoor environment; (2) implementing questionnaire survey analysis to explore people's environmental self-perceptions and conducting a meta-analysis of the measurement results for air quality and physical aspects; and (3) constructing an indoor monitoring and management system. The experimental and analysis results of this research reveal that most of the office occupants preferred a cooler environment with a lower temperature. Additionally, because the summers in Taiwan are humid and hot, the occupants of an indoor space tend to feel uncomfortable because of the high humidity and poor indoor air quality. Therefore, Variable Air Volume (VAV), two air intakes, and exhaust plant are installed to improve indoor environment. After improvement, a lower temperature (approximately 21.2-23.9°C) indirectly reduces humidity, thereby making the occupants comfortable. Increasing air velocity to 0.1~0.15 m/s, the carbon dioxide concentrations decrease below the requirement of the WHO. Ninety-five percent of the workers corresponded to the standard comfort zone after this improvement.
